KOTA News EXTRA: Energy vampires - save on heat and electricity

Earlier this week, KOTA Territory News showed how an energy audit can cut down utility costs by finding air leaks in the home.  But there are many other ways to save on heating and electricity.

Energy audits focus on more than just drafty doors and windows.  Auditors will check the furnace for gas leaks and electrical appliances for efficiency.  Auditors find that most people could cut down costs by making the simplest changes.

"Things that people don't think about.  Like your cell phone charger that is sitting there plugged in all the time is actually using electricity all the time, even if it's not charging your phone.  Your DVR, your television are other appliances that are on all the time," said John Snyder, an energy auditor with Green Steps, Inc.

Snyder says most homes lose 20 to 50 percent of their energy to air leaks and by wasting electricity.
