Airline merger could increase ticket prices

The merger of two airline giants could bring ticket price hikes to Rapid City fliers.
Last week, US Airways and American Airlines announced their merger into the largest airline in the world.

Airport officials at Rapid City Regional Airport say they're still unsure how this will affect American Eagle, the local operating branch of American Airlines.

While economists predict price hikes and service cuts, local airport staff say it may be a mixed bag for consumers.
"The more choices you have as a consumer, the better off you are. But sometimes if you have too many airlines or too many businesses involved in it you may not have the quality you need to have whereas if you join them together, it may enhance destinations," said Peter Girtz, Deputy Director of Airport Operations.
The merger of the two airlines carried an $11 billion dollar price tag.  In the last decade, the number of major airlines has decreased from six to now just three.
