Rapid City could move July 4th fireworks to New Year's

Early concern about the upcoming fire season may lead to the cancellation of a yearly summer event in Rapid City.

At Wednesday's Legal and Finance Committee meeting, Fire Chief Mike Maltaverne presented a report calling for a cancellation the 4th of July fireworks show over the Executive Golf Course.

Instead, Maltaverne suggests a New Year's Eve show.

He says some of the upsides will be a higher economic impact downtown, less competition with other 4th of July events, and less traffic congestion.

The committee unanimously acknowledged the report, moving the fireworks display to the New Year's celebration.

The matter still requires approval from the full city council.
