Children First: Zumba teaches kids good exercise habits

Just like their parents, more and more young kids spend their time in Zumba classes nowadays.

"She's doing something her mommy's doing and she loves the music and the chance to be creative," said Nicole Poll, mother of a three year-old daughter.

"They'll learn a lot of salsa, a lot of Latin rhythms, movements.  They do a lot of games," said Zumba instructor Lorrie Anderson.

Zumba helps young kids view exercise as a fun activity, which can lead to long term health benefits.

"So often we have children who are not getting any exercise or maybe just a little on the school playground.  And they then as adults are told, 'Well you need to exercise because now you have diabetes or hypertension,'" said dietician Patty Bell Usher.

The health benefits are a big reason why Poll brings her daughter to the class at the Family Life Center in Sheridan every Wednesday afternoon.

"We're raising a generation of kids that seem to resort to technology for entertainment and recreation and they're just becoming more and more sedentary," said Poll.

"When we start exercising when we're really young and we have fun with it and we enjoy it, then it can develop.  It can develop into a passion, say for sports or for dance," said Usher.

The kids' Zumba class in Sheridan meets every Wednesday at 3:30 PM.
