Rapid City Police bust 7 in prostitution sting

Posted:

Seven men from KOTA Territory went to a Rapid City hotel Thursday expecting to pay for sex with a prostitute. Police say the men from Rapid City, Lead, Sturgis and Custer visited a Rapid City motel for one reason: they planned to hire a prostitute  for sexual activity.

According to the Rapid City Police Department Communications Specialist Tarah Heupel , the men were responding to an online ad. Two of the men arrived with marijuana and were taken to jail.
The other five were cited and released.

In October, Rapid City Police conducted a similar operation, which led to the arrests of four people. Captain James Johns says prostitution is not a victimless crime and is happening in the area. "It is more of the ads that we're seeing and things of that nature - but it is occurring and there is a market for it here," Johns said.

Since the Department plans to continue their operation, no more details are available at this time.

The following men were arrested:

Gene King, 33 of Sturgis

Gabriel Olson, 31 of Rapid City

Clifford Dower, 58 of Lead

Michael Fischer, 43 of Rapid City

Ricky Woods, 50 of Custer

Jason Newman, 31 of Rapid City

Thomas Steele, 47 of Black Hawk

Hiring for sexual activity is a class 1 misdemeanor.
