A Rapid City man pleads not guilty to a New Year's day kidnapping and assault at a Rapid City motel.

In 7th Circuit Court on Tuesday, Luke Elk Nation, 29, pleaded not guilty to charges of second degree kidnapping, aggravated assault with a glass candlestick and possession of methamphetamine and marijuana.

Prosecutors say Elk Nation severely beat and held a woman against her will at the South Dakota Rose Inn on January 1st this year.

Prosecutors allege Elk Nation has previous convictions for aggravated assault, eluding and other alcohol related offense. Elk Nation may face additional jail time if those prior felonies are considered at trial.

His bond, previously set at $100,000, has been lowered to $50,000.

He faces upwards of 40 years in prison if convicted.
