Producers shell out big bucks at buffalo sale

The buffalo for sale at The Central States Fairgrounds are giving the stock show's cattle a run for their money.

Livestock producers in the Black Hills community brought their fat wallets to Sunday's buffalo auction in Rapid City. Potential buyers described the large animals in the auction cage as excellent quality buffalo they'd love to have join their herds.

The average price for a bull is around $4,500, but many of the bulls were sold for a lot more because of their genetics, temperament and physique.

"If you have a quality calf, you may be able to get $1,200 a calf and therefore you've raised the price of all your calves and in the long run it's an investment to better your own herd, making more money down the road," said the North Dakota producer and buyer Doug Paulson.

Paulson took three bulls back home to North Dakota, including the highest bid bull of the event at a whopping $12,000.
