Survey says: South Dakotans are financially responsible

South Dakotans received good marks compared to the rest of the country when it comes to financial stability.

In a recently released report from the Corporation for Enterprise Development, South Dakota ranks 11th overall in the ability of residents to achieve financial security.

The scorecard evaluates all states in 53 different financial issues.

While South Dakota ranked well in most categories, the report also revealed two in five residents are living on the edge of a financial disaster by not saving their money.

Jeff Partridge, a financial advisor, says it's important to plan for the unexpected.

"Start early and compound your money by saving it and saving it at an early age. So to start early and make it a habit would be the first way you can actually really help yourself financially long term," said Partridge.

Wyoming ranks 4th in the country, while Nebraska ranks 19th.
