Friday is the first official day for the 2013 Black Hills Rodeo and Stock Show, and there is a lot of work, dirt, and money that goes into making this huge event a success.
There is more than 1,000 pieces of steel in place, 118 trailer loads of dirt and chippings hauled in, and a solid week of set up at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center for this year's stock show and rodeo.
Civic Center General Manager Brian Maliske says they invest more $500,000 in the event each year, but he also says that all the hard work pays off for the community. "The economic impact has been estimated anywhere from $18.5 to $21 million on the Black Hills region for the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo alone and honestly I think that's a light estimate, I think we are even greater than that.
Maliske says it's estimated that more than 250,000 people come to the Black Hills Stock show and Rodeo.
