
According to a news release from the Rapid City Police Department, a male teenager is in custody following a series of crimes early Tuesday morning:
1:00 a.m.: Police received a report of subjects breaking house windows at 524 Mall Drive. Three windows are broken out.
1:30 a.m.: Police received a report of subjects breaking house and car windows at 125 Crescent Drive. A male resident told police that he heard glass breaking and went outside to stop the suspects, and was beaten with a baseball bat. The victim went to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Witnesses reported seeing the suspects leave in a silver truck.
1:35 a.m.: Police received a report a fight at 426 Fairlane Drive. The caller reported that several subjects were assaulting a male victim with a bat. The subjects left in a silver truck. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
6:00 a.m.: A caller at 432 Fairlane Drive reported a male subject carrying a gun and a baseball bat, trying to enter the apartment. Witnesses reported that the suspect had a gun in his possession. The suspect left in a silver truck. No gunshot injuries or damage were reported.
Police located the suspect vehicle on Cambell Street, and initiated a pursuit. The driver lost control of the vehicle on Bridge View Drive, stopped, and fled the scene on foot. Officers pursued the suspect, and located him outside a residence on the 1000 block of East Ohio. The suspect refused to comply with police commands, and a K9 was used to apprehend the suspect.
The 16-year-old from Rapid City was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time. Police have not recovered a gun, despite an extensive search of the area. Police urge residents in the area to be careful, and call police immediately if they find a firearm or other weapon.
Police discovered the silver truck was stolen on Jan. 20 from a gas station at 302 E North Street. The 16-year-old driver was arrested for burglary, felony destruction of private property, aggravated eluding, possession of a stolen vehicle, minor consuming, and threatening law enforcement. Police are still determining his involvement in the incidents at 524 Mall Drive and 125 Crescent Drive, and believe additional suspects were involved.
The investigation is continuing.
