18 juniors with explosive shooting talent compete at the Junior Olympics Course at Camp Rapid on January 19th & 20th.
In day two of the 2013 South Dakota Junior Olympics Course and State Qualifier Match, athletes ages 12 to 20 competed for the gold.
The competition consisted of a three position international style match, and a standing air rifle match.
During the air rifle match the shooter must hit a dot the size of a pin-head to get the highest score.
For four of the junior shooters, Sunday was much more.
"Today we also gave away an award that was won by a team of shooters, a team from Rapid City Rifle Club. They won first in the nation. They looked pretty excited, they didn't seem to initially understand the levity of it, so I tried to tell them, it's really a big deal, it's the first time we had a team win at that level," said James McGuire, one of the shooting coaches.
And just like the Olympics, the top three shooters in each category will receive a gold, silver, and bronze medal. They may move on to a preliminary match for a chance to compete in the Olympics if they qualify.
