Street Crimes Unit reports progress in North Rapid City

In September, the Rapid City Police Department took what was a successful pilot project, aimed at cleaning up downtown, and expanded it.  For the past 3 1/2 months officers assigned to the Street Crimes Unit have worked to clean up north Rapid City.

The unit has focused on the 400 block of East Watertown Street, an area with a high volume of calls. The street was home to a few renters, who, according to Street Crimes Sergeant Darren Soucy, were causing problems for numerous people in the neighborhood.

A budding relationship between officers and area landlords mean problem renters are often kicked out, leading to fewer calls for service. "Management was surprised to learn of the high rate of calls and that was as simple as a phone call," Sergeant Soucy said.

Sergeant Soucy says the Unit has also helped disband known drug house.  He also adds that despite limited manpower, the unit has made headway.
