Rapid City police arrest a man in the motel murder case

Update on Homicide Investigation - 9:56pm

After questioning, Charles Birdshead was placed under arrest on the following charges:

22nd Degree Murder, in the shooting death of Eustacio Murrufo.

Commission of a felony while armed with a firearm.

Possession of a controlled weapon.

44th Degree Rape.

Distribution of a controlled substance to a minor.

Two warrants for obstructing police and possession of a controlled substance.

After a week long search and numerous tips from the public, police apprehended the man wanted for questioning in the murder of a man at the South Dakota Rose Inn one week ago.

Thirty-year-old Charles Birdshead was taken into custody at around 7:00 P.M. Monday night in a mobile home on Marquette Drive in Star Village. Law enforcement officers say he was arrested on three active warrants, for obstructing police, possession of a controlled substance and failure to appear. Police still say Birdshead is a person of interest in the case, but have yet to declare him a suspect.

33-year-old Eustacio Marrufo was found dead in the parking lot of the South Dakota Rose Inn on East Boulevard North on January 7. Police still believe this was an isolated incident, and that Marrufo and the assailant were acquaintances.
