Rapid City community meets Downtown square sculptor

The sculptor selected for a downtown Rapid City project had the chance to showcase his work to the community.

Japanese artist, Masayuki Nagase has been selected to carve the granite sculpture at Main Street Square. Members of the community were able to check out the project's blueprint at the Dahl Fine Arts Center Monday night, while viewing his artwork on display.

Nagase says he's excited to work with the community on his wind and water theme design slated for Main Street Square.

"I feel very excited to start with this project," said Nagase. "This is one of the most exciting projects I ever had."

The first stone will be carved in July, but the project is expected to take 3-5 years to complete.

Nagase currently resides in San Francisco, California but plans to soon move to Rapid City. He has been carving stone for more than 40 years.
