Judge Thorstenson leaves circuit court post

After close to four years of serving the 7th judicial circuit, which include four counties in the Black Hills, Judge Mary Thorstenson has left her post as Circuit Judge.
Starting January 1st, Thorstenson began her new position as an Indian Probate Judge with the Department of Interior's office of hearings and appeals.

Thorstenson says she now presides of over land inheritance issues, spread across the country.

Although her criminal cases have been re-assigned to other circuit judges, Thorstenson says she will regret not seeing many of those cases through to the end.
"It's never a good time [to leave], I loved serving the people of the 7th circuit. Where I am now I can serve more people across the county," said Thorstenson.
Thorstenson previously presided over many controversial cases, including the Edward Berges child homicide case, and the case of admitted police shooter James Baker.
