The victim in Monday night's shooting at the South Dakota Rose Inn has been identified as 33 year old Eustacio Marrufo.
He was recently known to be living in Rapid City and in Kansas.
Police believe this was an isolated incident, and that Marrufo and the shooter were acquaintances.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
At 7:10 PM Monday night police were called to the South Dakota Rose Inn on East Blvd North for a report of shots fired.
Marrufo was found in the parking lot, where he was pronounced dead.
Motel staff say Marrufo was not staying at the motel.
They say two cars involved in the shooting were passing through the motel parking lot when the shooting occurred.
A neighboring business owner says the area has had its ups and downs.
"We've made a few calls for some concerns we've had for folks in the area. The impressive thing to us is the police response," said Linda Kelly, who works at Crazy Critter's pet store, next door to the motel.
At this time, police don't have any suspects.
But they are asking the public for help.
