After winning a contentious June election, Pennington county's newly elected State's Attorney is sworn into office.
Former South Dakota US Assistant Attorney Mark Vargo began his first day in office Monday, as he took his oath of office in front of a crowd of judges, attorneys and law enforcement officers.
Vargo says he hopes to make some immediate structural changes to the office, specifically aimed at changing the way cases are staffed. He hopes to give young attorneys more experience, while allowing veteran prosecutors the chance to dig more into their cases.
"It's not enough to believe in justice, you have to work for it. If you have all of the right information you will generally make the right decision. And it's putting in that effort and work to make sure we make the right decisions that I think is the most important thing in the office," said Vargo.
Vargo unseated 16 year veteran of the State's Attorneys office Glen Brenner last year. Vargo brings 24 years of experience to the job.
