A population boom in the Northern Hills forces a local school district to expand its classrooms.
The Spearfish School District has experienced a growth in the number of kindergarten students during the past few years.
Paul Soriano, Principal of West Elementary, said back in December the Spearfish School Board voted to approve all day kindergarten and to renovate the vacant East Elementary School to house the overflow of classes.
Soriano said the new building will be able to house at least ten sections of kindergarten, as well as the pre-school classes.
"That relieves a lot of the enrollment pressure on this building, so we'll have some breathing room once again here at West Elementary," said Soriano.
The kindergarten and pre-school classes will make the move to the renovated building in the fall.
