The City of Rapid City approved a construction contract for the creation of a new trail on Skyline Drive.
Crews have already begun work on the $25,000 trail. It's estimated to be complete by mid–January depending on the weather.
The new multi–purpose trail will be 48 inches wide, and is the first phase in the Skyline Wilderness Area Project that will eventually become a network of trails.
Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Biegler says the overall project will stimulate economic development in the community. "Studies have shown that areas that have a good recreation program and lots of things to do in the outdoors do appeal to people to move to an area or to relocate businesses to an area."
According to Landscape Designer Alex Desmitt, construction of the trail got a jump– start thanks to a $50,000 grant left over from 2008.
