The Lakota National Invitational may be over but Rapid City businesses are still feeling the slam dunk effects. Rushmore Plaza Civic Center general manager Brian Maliske says tickets sales to the basketball game was up 6% from last year while the entire tournament grew nearly 16%.
Maliske says the average attendee spent $49 per day over a span of four days, and that doesn't include money spent at local hotels, restaurants and other businesses.
"If you take that number and multiply it out by the 41,000 people we believe we had come through the facility, you are gonna get well in excess of $5 million spent," Maliske said. "And if you were to add that on top of the fact that many of these people are actually doing their Christmas shopping, it's far, far beyond that $49."
More than 28,000 people attended last year's tournament. This year's LNI took place December 19 through the 22.
