Appeal against 3-day wait for SD abortion dropped

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) _ Planned Parenthood has announced that it plans to drop its appeal of a legal provision that requires women seeking abortions in South Dakota to wait three days.

Women in South Dakota have to wait 72 hours before they are allowed to end a pregnancy under a 2011 law - the longest waiting period in the country.

Sarah Stoesz is the president of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota. She says the decision to drop the appeal was not an easy one to make, but that the organization thinks it's best to focus on fighting another provision from the 2011 law.

That provision requires women to undergo counseling at pregnancy help centers that discourage abortions before they can terminate a pregnancy.
