Officials from the Black Hills Area Chapter of the American Red Cross presented a five foot Christmas card to the South Dakota National Guard at Camp Rapid to thank Soldiers and Airmen for their service and sacrifice, Thursday, Dec. 20.
This is the third year the Red Cross has taken the Christmas card around Western South Dakota for community members to sign.
"This is a way for our organization to give back," said Richard Smith, Black Hills Area Chapter executive director. "It's a great way for the folks who may not have an opportunity to tell our Soldiers and Airmen how much they appreciate what they do for our country each and every day."
There are approximately 600 signatures on the card from kids, adults and retired veterans.
"We go to a lot of community events to get signatures, such as parades or even shopping centers," said Smith. "Everyone wants to come and sign it and they are excited to have the opportunity to give thanks."
