Librarian becomes Santa for hundreds of middle school students

Posted:

For the past six years, one Rapid City middle school librarian has taken on the role of Santa for hundreds of students.

Arlette Schweitzer makes sure every one of the 540 student at North Middle school receives at least two gifts for Christmas.

It began six years ago when Schweitzer  brought in a few gently used items and randomly distributed them to students.

Since then, a team of volunteers and more than $1,500 in donations have allowed her to buy presents all year long in preparation for the big giveaway. It's a highly anticipated event, that Schweitzer says students look forward to all year.

"The need is great. I have students who come to me and say 'this is the only Christmas presents we have'," said Schweitzer.

Schweitzer says students usually pick out gifts for their families first and foremost. Free glove and scarf sets and jackets are also distributed to students.
