Piles of coats collected in KOTA Territory

One Rapid City nonprofit organization has been collecting coats and other winter gear for the homeless since November. And Friday a group of volunteers began to sort through the piles of donations.

Cornerstone Rescue Mission has held a coat drive every year for nearly a decade, and this year their goal of 500 coats has been surpassed. The coats will be given away to those in need next Thursday at the Cornerstone's Christmas Store Event held at their thrift store.

Volunteer Coordinator Camille Teigen says it's a wonderful event around the holidays, and even young children are in the giving spirit this year. "We had a child donate a blanket and he actually wrote a note and put it in the blanket so that the person that received that would read his little note and he also took coins from his penny jar and put them in socks so that the child who got the socks could have some spare change for the holiday season," said Teigen.

Left over coats will be given to the mission to distribute as needed.
