New Hot Springs Veteran's Home gives "homey" feel to residents

Engineers, architects and administrators gathered to finalize plans for a $34 million State Veteran's home in Hot Springs.

Thanks to one of the largest federal VA construction grants given to any state, and the South Dakota legislature, plans for the new Veteran's Home are almost complete.

Superintendent Larry Wilcox says the new home will combine four different buildings into one at one level, but he says the biggest change will be the "homey" atmosphere for residents. "In the culture change, the resident is going to become the boss, in other words they're no longer going to be institutionalized, like in the old system, these residents are going to tell you what time they want to get up, when they want to eat, when they want to shower, the only thing that will probably be regulated is their medication," said Wilcox.

Construction on the new Veteran's Home is estimated to start later this spring.
