Community members in Sturgis donate valuable time to make sure the rally goes off without a hitch, and on Thursday evening the surrounding area reaped the rewards of its hard work.
The organization known as Sturgis Motorcycle Rally incorporated, which act as a steward of the Sturgis brand presented checks totaling more than $71,000 to Sturgis area groups.
To qualify for receiving a grant local groups needed to meet a number of qualifications but most importantly need to serve the Sturgis area.
"The funds have to be used within the Sturgis community or to benefit people that live in the community. And that also includes our school districts which cover Whitewood and eastern Meade county," said Kathy Hersrud of Sturgis Rally Charities.
Some of the groups receiving checks included the Sturgis chapter of the United Way and various church groups.
