Outdoor enthusiasts may soon be able to walk or run right up to Mount Rushmore.
South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has proposed $500,000 of state funding go toward a new 18 mile spur of the Mickelson Trail to run close to Mount Rushmore.
Local business owner and Keystone Town Board President Gideon Oakes says the new trail would greatly benefit Keystone.
"Like I said it's been a long time coming. And a lot of people have been really excited about this project for a long time and now that it's coming, if it comes, it'll be a great thing for everybody," said Oakes.
Oakes also says he would expect heavier foot traffic through Keystone during seasonal running events.
A timeline for the expansion project has yet to be set.
