Students in KOTA Territory will have the opportunity to take an American Indian Literature class come next school year.
Junior Bettelyoun, Director of Indian Education for the Rapid City School District says he noticed a need for the class and proposed adding an American Indian Literature class as an option for seniors.
Bettelyoun along with a team of teachers created the course and composed a list of Native American authors who work would be used in the class.
He says it's an important addition for native and non– native students alike.
"It will be a wider spectrum for people to talk about culture, history and a little bit of language. It will be a good course to cover a wide range of subjects," said Bettelyoun.
Currently there are only two literature classes offered to seniors in Rapid City Schools and neither is based in Native American studies.
