Rapid City is getting a new trail, thanks to a large grant left over from 2008.
A new trail, which extends just under a mile long on Skyline Drive, is currently under construction. The Skyline Trail will be 48 inches wide and is the first phase of the 2013 Vision Fund Project. Which will eventually become a network of trails in the Skyline Wilderness Area will eventually be developed. Overall the 2013 Vision Fund Project on Skyline will cost more than $900,000.
Rapid City Parks and Recreation Landscape Designer Alex DeSmitt says he wants to ensure everyone can have access to the trail. "A lot of people are going to be using this trail; hikers, bikers, dog walkers, elderly, young kids, you name it," said DeSmitt.
"I think it's a wonderful thing, I think the more we can get people out here and using it the more this place will be preserved and protected for a long, long time and hopefully forever," said avid mountain biker Andy Long.
The skyline trail is predicted to be complete by the end of January; weather permitting.
