Domestic violence incident spills over to elementary school

A Lawrence County man was arrested today (Wednesday) after a domestic violence incident earlier in the week that prompted an elementary school lockdown.

Arrested was Michael Earl Thomas, 51.  He is charged with simple assault (domestic violence).

Monday, Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies were called to a domestic violence complaint at a home just west of Spearfish.  No arrests were made at that time.  Tuesday, the suspect Thomas reportedly made phone calls to Creekside Elementary School attempting to contact the victim.  That caused the Spearfish School District to institute a soft lockdown and other minimal security measures at the school.

Police say there were no direct threats to the school or students.  Rather, the security measures were simply precautionary and education took place as usual at all Spearfish schools.
