Rapid City council approves harvesting of 200 deer

The Rapid City Council approved a proposal Monday night to help manage the deer population within city limits.

City Council members voted in favor of the harvesting of 200 deer within Rapid City limits. Council members also approved a motion to revise deer management plans.

Although South Dakota Sportsmen Against Hunger will provide funding for processing of the deer meat and will then donate it to the food bank, some city council members expressed their concerns about the distribution of venison, particularly, who is determined as needy.

Council members and the Parks Division Manager Lon Van Deusen will further discuss the distribution system at the next Public Works meeting.
