Kenneth Dale Thomason, 53, was found guilty of aggravated grand theft by deception over $100,000.00 on Wednesday in Deadwood.
According to Lawrence County State's Attorney John Fitzgerald, in January, 2008, Thomason and his wife tricked his mother-in-law into signing over her interest in a hotel located in Lead, by promising in writing, to pay $200,000.00 from the mortgaging of the hotel. Instead of mortgaging the property, Thomason obtained a deed to the hotel by using a forged power of attorney. Thomason had arranged for the sale and deceived his victim about his plan. Thomason and his wife sold the hotel property and fled the country for the Dominican Republic.
Thomason was extradited in January, 2012. He faces 15 years as a result of the grand theft. His wife was arrested in 2011. She spent 8 months in jail for her role in the crime.
