Fiscal cliff negotiations could actually be one of the reasons a new farm bill passes.
Because a House Ag bill went through with significant savings, South Dakota's Republican U.S. representative Kristi Noem says the farm bill could be used as a revenue source for other provisions in fiscal cliff negotiations.
Noem has been fighting to get a deal done for most of her term.
She believes the best way to help state farmers is through a new five-year bill.
"Not having the farm bill done right now has certainly affected our Ag Industry. The most important thing is that we take action soon, so that the Ag community can have the confidence they need to plant next year's crop," said Noem
Lawmakers are making preparations to see which parts of the current farm bill can be extended if no deal is reached by the end of the year.
