Death penalty not decided for accused Walmart stabber

More than a dozen family members and friends of Morgan Myers gathered in a seventh circuit courtroom Monday to watch as her alleged killer was brought before a judge.
Both the defense and state are awaiting the release of medical records for 30 year old Michael Young.

Police say he stabbed Morgan Myers, 30, several times in the Rapid City Walmart parking lot- killing her and her unborn child. He was later found by police barricaded in a nearby hotel with self inflicted stab wounds.

He was hospitalized in August for complications from his injuries.

Newly elected state's attorney Mark Vargo says he's working with the Myers family to determine whether or not the death penalty will be sought.
"I think I have to keep open mind until the end. Whenever the state is considering taking a life, that decision has to be made with all information, and if you start leaning one way or another, you're no longer really open to all information," said Vargo.
Young is scheduled for another court appearance on January 14th.

Young is charged with first degree murder, fetal homicide, felony violation of protection order and stalking.
