Red kettle campaign kicks off

The familiar red kettles are once again scattered around KOTA Territory as the Salvation Army kicks off its fundraising campaign on Friday.

This campaign brings in 1/3 of the amount of money to help run the social services offered by the Salvation Army.

Last year they raised 130 thousand dollars in Rapid City alone from the Red Kettle Campaign.

Major James Beardsley says this year their goal is to beat last year's amount by one dollar.

"The economy is kind of dragging so we're a little leery of trying to push the community to try and get more. So we're going to cut our budget a little bit but in areas that will not directly affect our services," said Major Beardsley.

Through Black Friday volunteers are manning 16 kettles around town. But starting next week, 24 will be out and about to collect your spare change through Christmas Eve day.
