Residential units driving Rapid City's 2012 building numbers

Despite a down national economy, the housing market in Rapid City continues to look strong.

Through 10 months of building permits, 2012 has actually seen a large increase in the number of residential units being built in Rapid City. This years number is at 330 permits versus last year's amount of 219.

Last year's record number of permits was met in part because of 21 commercial building permits. Currently 2012 is only at 11, but with two months to go the total permit numbers should finish strong.

"There's more housing this year than last year. Housing's been pretty good this year. And there's more apartments that were built this year too. With what we should take in November and December that we'll make about 200 million this year," said Brad Solon, Rapid City's Building Official.

If the city does reach $200 million in permits, it would be the third highest year on record for building permits.
