Freed's turns 90

According to Small Business Profile, more businesses closed in South Dakota in 2009 than opened; with these odds, starting a small business can be scary. But one KOTA Territory store that has survived two economic slumps and is now celebrating its 90th anniversary.

The first store opened in Nebraska in 1922. "Luckily our founder Henry Freed had the vision and had a passion for furniture and passed that onto his family members who passed it on to us," said Owner Ka Alberts.

The Rapid City store location was third to open out of six, but now it's the only one still in operation. "I really think the reason we're still here is because we do have great customer service," said Owner Diane Alberts.

Diane and her husband Ka took over the store in 1985, "It's been a blast," said Diane.

Over the years they've expanded the store. It now has ten levels, six with furniture on them and it expands over 50 thousand square feet. "We always tease that once you get to the end you're actually in Meade County so it's pretty good sized," Said Diane with a laugh.

She started working at Freed's straight out of college; making $3.25 an hour. "My whole life revolves around Freed's," said Diane.

The Alberts say it takes more than great customer service for a business to thrive. "If you own a business you need to be there first hand to take care of that business and I really believe that's what my husband and myself do along with an incredible crew," said Diane.

"You have to love what you do; they say if you love your work you never work a day in your life," said Ka.

After nearly 35 years at Freed's, the Alberts don't plan on calling it quits anytime soon. "It's been quite a ride, we hope it continues," said Diane.

In honor of Freed's 90th anniversary and as a thank you to customers, they are giving away $10,000 in prizes this week.
