Local teachers learn how to identify and help "at risk" students

Posted:

Monday, dozens of local teachers made their way out to the Rapid City Mason's At Risk Workshop.

George Bauder, Coordinator for the Student Assistant Program says the purpose is to identify and help students who come from troubled homes, have attendance issues, or suicidal thoughts.

He says many teachers attend because they are never taught how to handle these students.

"It's important because every school in the nation has children who are at risk, if the time existed in the Teacher Preparation Program at the college level, they could teach this kind of information; It doesn't exist," says Bauder.

Monday was the first day of the three day long workshop, which runs statewide.
