KOTA Care & Share Food Drive bagel kickoff raises thousands

It's one of the only times we can appreciate bumper to bumper traffic in downtown Rapid City.

Cars lined St. Joseph street to trade cash and food donation for a cup of hot coffee and a bagel Friday morning.

But the cold weather doesn't dull this community's generosity.

It was cold, early, and for these dozens of volunteers -a great time to pull together to feed the hungry.
"It's always interesting to get up this early in the morning. But it's nice when there bagels involved, so it's great," said Mike Modrick, KOTA TV Weatherman.
Hundreds of bright-eyed commuters stopped by to give their spare change, and food donations, in exchange for a bagel and beverage.
"It feels good to give! We thank them and then we give them something back in exchange," said Helene Duhamel, KOTA TV News Anchor.
And the proceeds go to a community cause that's more relevant every year.
"It's getting close to the holidays, it's been a tough year for the food banks, we're going to try to help them out. Anything anyone can bring down will certainly help out," said Dick Phipps, event volunteer.
"What it means is, there's people who wouldn't have a chance to eat, that now will this holiday season. It's an incredible event for entire community," said Modrick.
And these volunteers are never surprised to see the same faces year after year.
"We definitely see regulars. Someone said 'I got Mike again, I get Mike every year'," said Modrick.

A preliminary tally shows that 742 cars participated in Friday's event.
The cash donations so far total more than $8,350 with more coins to be counted.
Close to 600 pounds of food were also donated.
