How to avoid long lines at the courthouse

Forget the long lines to register your vehicle. The Department of Revenue and the DMV has created new self serve terminals.
Officials say wait times at the Pennington county Courthouse can exceed 45 minutes in the busy winter months.
But the new automated self-service vehicle registration machines will cut down the wait.

One has been located in Rapid City's public safety building for almost a year.

Another terminal is expected to be installed at the Rushmore Mall by next year.

The self service machines can renew vehicle tags 24 hours a day, for a two dollar convenience fee.
"It's really worth your money. You can license from any county across the state from those machines," said Janet Sayler, Pennington county Treasurer.
"It would be nice to get all my business done when I go to the mall," said Virginia Conlee, who often would have to drive to Sturgis to renew her vehicle tags.
There are four self service terminals across South Dakota.
Six more are expected to be added by next year.
