Varilek, Noem among early voters in South Dakota

Republican Rep. Kristi Noem and Democratic challenger Matt Varilek were among the first voters to cast ballots early Tuesday before making last-minute campaign pushes in their hard-fought race for South Dakota's lone U.S. House seat.

Noem spokesman Tom Erickson says she cast her vote at the Fire Hall in Hazel. Varilek spokesman David Benson says Varilek voted at a polling site near his home in Sioux Falls.

Benson says Varilek is ``very confident.'' Erickson says Noem is ``cautiously optimistic.''

South Dakota Secretary of State Jason Gant predicts about 70 percent of the state's registered voters will cast ballots in this year's election, down slightly from the 73 percent voter turnout in the 2008 presidential election. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.
