Man pleads not guilty to new fetal homicide charge

Posted:

New charges have been filed against a Rapid City man accused of drugging his girlfriend in order to kill her unborn child.

35-year old Alfredo Vargas was arraigned Monday morning on the felony charge of attempted fetal homicide or an alternative charge of procurement of abortion.

Prosecutors allege that Vargas gave his pregnant girlfriend an herbal mixture that would induce an abortion. The baby was born healthy.

The Pennington County State's Attorney's Office dropped similar charges earlier this year when a judge rejected a witness for the state.

Fetal homicide carries a maximum sentence of up to 25 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

Procurement of abortion carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison and a $4,000 dollar fine.

Vargas's next court appearance is Friday the 9th where his attorney says they will discuss bond.
