2012 Sturgis Rally profit twice as much as 2011

More people spent more money at the 2012 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally compared to last year.

Christina Steele with the City of Sturgis says the city brought in a net profit of $399,642 this year. That's twice as much as last year's profit of $197,107.

Steele says this year's attendance was up seven percent for the ten day event.

That translates to around 450 thousand people who spent more than 13 million dollars at the rally.

"The numbers were good, not only in attendance but our sponsorship revenues were up considerably this year. They were up 22% and that's quite a jump," said Steele.

Steele says even the amount of garbage generated by rally-goers was up.

City crews hauled away more than 580 tons this year; that's up 12 percent from last year.
