Friends and admirers of George McGovern paid their respects to the former senator and democratic presidential candidate during a public viewing Thursday afternoon.
Several dozen people streamed into the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls.
Inside, McGovern's casket was draped with the U.S. Flag. Black- and- white photos of McGovern are projected onto screens on each side of the sanctuary.
Mourners on their way in and out recalled fond memories and spoke of McGovern's generous nature and kind heart.
"George McGovern is a wonderful, honest man, or he was. I knew his wife because she's from Woonsocket. While I was teaching in Mitchell, I taught two of his children and he was my teacher at the college so I couldn't pass up the opportunity," said Rose Marie Moran of Woonsocket.
