It's every parent' nightmare to see their children seriously injured.
A big–box store in Rapid City is helping protect children from serious injury.
Today, Kohl's department store made a generous donation of $23,331 to Rapid City Regional Hospital's "Don't Thump Your Melon" program.
The mission is to promote outdoor safety through educational seminars and bike rodeos with an emphasis on the use of helmets.
In the past year, the program has given away 3400 helmets.
Regional Health Foundation Project Coordinator Shawn Powers reinforced the importance of head protection while biking and skating, "It's a simple thing to do putting on a helmet on your head and it can really cut down on your chances of serious injuries, lifelong head injury."
This is the seventh year that the "Kohl's Cares" program has donated to "Don't Thump Your Melon".
Today's donation should provide the means to purchase approximately 3000 helmets for distribution.
