Accused cigarette-stabber a "danger to society"

Posted:

Bond has been set for a man accused of stabbing two people over cigarettes.

Nico Steele, 22, is charged with three counts of aggravated assault, and one count of possessing methamphetamine.

Judge Janine Kern finally set Steele's bond Monday at $250,000, saying she believed him to be a danger to the community because of his alleged violent behavior and criminal history.

Prosecutors say Steele has a prior felony for simple assault on a law enforcement officer, dating back to 2008.

Steele's attorney says his client is eager to fight the charges and support his pregnant wife.

Last month, three witnesses testified that Steele approached them and stabbed two of them when they refused to give him a cigarette.

He faces a maximum of 90 years in prison, if found guilty on all charges.
