Update: Fork Fire near Custer

(Great Plains Fire Information map) (Great Plains Fire Information map)

Calm winds and lower temperatures overnight helped fire crews gain the upper hand on the Fork Fire located about six miles west of Custer.

The fire is 50-percent contained and firefighters continued building fire line Friday.  But spot fires are a concern because Thursday's heavy winds may have thrown embers outside the fire perimeter.

Crews will also begin mopping up.
Incident Commander Todd Hoover said, "Although temperatures are cooler this time of year, with the lack of significant moisture over the course of the summer and fall, fire danger is still very high and become extreme when high winds occur.  Fuels are extremely dry and the potential for large fires are likely."

The North Pole road has reopened although the public is asked to stay out of the area to avoid impeding fire suppression activities.  All evacuations have been lifted and homeowners have been allowed back into their homes.

One outbuilding was lost.
