Certain plants can help fire-proof your property

Posted:

Making your house fire-wise doesn't have to be a chore. It can be as simple as cleaning out your gutters and choosing the right plants.

A new fire-proof garden has been unveiled at Rapid City's outdoor campus.

The display was created to show people simple ways to fire proof their yards by using screening, rocks and fire-resistant vegetation.

Experts say large shrubbery, conifer, junipers, cedars and pine trees contain highly flammable oils and should not be planted close to your home.

They recommend desiduous trees instead, like maple and cottonwood varieties native to South Dakota.

"We don't always have enough fire trucks to protect every structure so the real goal is to get homeowners to get their home fire resistant and their house can survive by itself without help from us because we might not be there to do that," said Lt. Tim Weaver with the Rapid City Fire Department.

Experts recommend cleaning out your gutters and even installing a rock garden or screening around your home to help fire proof your property.
