Rapid City landfill advances plans for 'Citizen Campus'

Posted:

On windy days like today, the local landfill is forced to close.

A new drop–off area called a "citizen campus" will change this.

The campus will allow people to drop off smaller loads during any weather condition, including wind.

A map of the campus shows it will also separate cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks from the larger commercial haulers.

The landfill's superintendent, Karl Merbach, says safety is a main motivator for the citizen campus project.

"From a safety standpoint, on days like this when we have a lot of wind, we want to make sure people are safe when they come out to the landfill or bring out recycling," said Merbach.

The landfill took in nearly 51,000 loads of trash from small-load customers last year.

As of right now, Merbach says the citizen campus is in final design now.

They're looking to take bids at the end of the year, will start construction in late winter/early spring, and hope to be fully operational at the beginning of next summer.
