Rapid City Mayor's Progress Report: new company coming to town

Posted:

It includes everything from the street crimes unit to the airport water main expansion; Rapid city Mayor Sam Kooiker presented his Rapid City Progress Report Wednesday morning.

The report acknowledged the opening of Anamosa Street and the city's partnership with several organizations such as the 24/7 program along with the Pennington County Sheriff's office to provide a new office space for the program, and Western Dakota Technical Institute to construct a fire station and training center shared between Rapid City area Schools as well as the City.

Also Kooiker said he was pleased to report that WL Plastics has found a location to build their plant in Rapid City. The company manufactures plastic pipe, most of which is shipped to North Dakota. He says the plant will bring 40 new jobs to the area and that's not including construction jobs. "One of the main driving forces for them wanting to come to Rapid City is they were shipping pipe all the way from Southern Utah to North Dakota and they wanted to be closer," said Kooiker. "They like what our community has to offer."

The mayor also discussed the 2013 budget and says it was reduced overall by a half of a percent from 2012. He said higher sales tax revenue and expiring Property Tax Increment Financing districts permitted them to balance the budget without increasing property taxes or using reserve funds.
